LABRADOR SUNSET LYRICS

Love Is In Return

from LABRADOR SUNSET

Love Is In Return
The Prince pulls into Portland town to take me away__
The salty sea, she welcomes me, I tell her what I need.
Everything the ocean gives me, I find in your arms__
The only thing that’s left for us is life upon a farm.
This sunshine day in early May is drawing out the color
That hides away all through the winter; the earth makes us this offer.
Everything the spring will give me, I see it in your eyes,
The petals on the golden tulips shine and then they die.

Back into the earth, back out of the earth,
Everything that leaves returns,
And love is in the returning,
Love is in return.

The day I laid my eyes on you they seemed to walk away
Upon the highways on your skin they skip and dance and play.
On a walk with children through a forest wise old trees look down
And bless us with their mystery before we’re back to town.
Someday when we are old and gray we’ll remember this moment
And ponder all the energies that lightened every movement.
Willows sway, coyotes bay and fish flow fins behind them.
We’ll look back and feel the currents left so far behind us, ooooh…

Labrador Sunset

from LABRADOR SUNSET

Labrador Sunset

My friends and I could not believe the real__
We could not believe the real.

We stood there looking west, we saw a yellow evening sky__
The head the sun stood sinking slowly under lover’s hand the sky.
As head ball sun seemed still
She turned Belle Isle Strait
To a vat of molten gold.

The whales swam playing hide and seek among icebergs,
Snarling fishnets, too.

The fishermen would never see the whales as we,
Money, living, food__
I wish that we could feed on vision
But you sure can’t live on that.
Vision, food, love__
The same separate need for three.

Doctor Guitar

from LABRADOR SUNSET

Doctor Guitar
Feel the rain, each drop
A whispering lip caress from me__
Taste the sea breeze,
The salty flavor is the gift I give
To all of the lonely,
To all of the lonely people.

Doctor Guitar tune our bodies
To the sunset over Labrador__
Golden waters are the sheets
That bring me to my knees.
Unbearable pleasure keep kissing away
’cause I can’t breathe quick enough to bear the joy.
Wintergreen and hot cold tea
Please play the tickle notes on the tender strings.

The sun breaks through
Finally shining melancholy fast away__
But no sooner here than gone she disappears
Like the workers never getting enough pay,
Never enough to eat,
Never enough to clothe the children.
My friends, the trees, the sunsets,
Hard to love them all their due
Without a one to touch__
Harder, harder can I try
Until the hollow box rings out, “You miss so much.”
Tell me I miss so much,
Keep right on showin’ me.

The amber glow the candle offers to the lake
I offer everyone tonight__
The weary sailor travels to my door,
I bathe him in the soft bright warming light__
Bathe him in the soft bright light,
Wash him in the warming light.
Here in this cove fury rages
Melting icebergs to a fragrant brew__
All you want and more is waiting here,
A shelter found by only a few,
Found by only a few,
You can find it, too.

The creeping driftwood silhouettes
Strange creatures crawling
On the rocky barren beach.
But know with me they welcome everyone
With the lessons only mystery can teach__
Only mystery can teach,
Teach us, reach us, mystery.
The rhythm of the changing waters
Crashes passion to the center of my soul__
This melody is nature’s gift to me,
The sound of the breakers as they roll__
Roll on water,
Roll into my soul.

Time For A Companion

from LABRADOR SUNSET

Time For A companion

It’s time for a companion, a new situation
So I’ll take a walk right into your lightness.
The saying ‘no’ inside of me is starting to annoy me
So I’ll tip the scales with some of your ‘yes.’
I don’t know how the spider wove the cobwebs
Stretched across the doors to my heart__
But your breathing in and out of me’s beginning to get to me,
Then another web just falls all apart.

I’m coming over to your side,
So open up wide__
Don’t need no invitation
Or mind deliberation,
’cause I’m shining through
With alot to do
And I don’t know how I got here
And the eye won’t ask the tear
How it got here.

It’s time for celebration, a canticle of union
’cause this dirty street here’s covered with snow.
The moon glow on the white with lamp post’s light
Has got me turned around so I don’t know the high from the low.
I don’t know a better looking feeling
Than the one you just put into my mouth__
So as these words get crazier
And rhymes they do get lazier,
Consider that this free bird’s flown south.

Be My Buttress

from LABRADOR SUNSET

Be My Buttress

Brushes kiss canvases,
Whittling tools notch granite
To softness__
And I look at you.

I’ve leaned on flying buttresses
And collapsed French cathedrals__
And now I lean on you__
Do not be afraid.

Familiarity breeds love in the lovers
And hate in the haters.

Help me for I’m sad, help me for I’m lonely,
Help me for I’m sad and lonely nine days old.

Lonely George

from LABRADOR SUNSET

Lonely George

Lonely George is buying two bit rabbits again__
Lusty Rita’s sleeping with her kittens again.
Empty packs of buts are piling up in their rooms.
Self-castrated emblems are returning to tombs.

But that’s George’s roost
And the only way Mary can call a truce.

Empty bottomed boxes start to reclaim the beer__
Full and bursting bosoms heave to get out the fear.
Partly ransomed babies try to plop from the womb,
Dazzled daisies bloom to try to throw off the gloom.

Lazy, lucid films try hard to lay in the sun__
Half-forgotten memories are looking for fun.
Hazy Harry’s lost his face between his own legs__
Palpitating Mary cannot cook her own eggs.

Self-addressed letters are left in the sink__
Boys and girls together begin to wear pink.
Mommy tells you leave the pretty birdies alone__
Daddy says that secrets are left better unknown.

Sally Benny

from LABRADOR SUNSET

Sally Benny

Young Sally Benny sleeps inside the closet
Underneath the stairway to my room.

She’s pretty in the morning,
How she looks so fresh I do not know.
She sneaks in in the evening,
Shivering cold, afraid someone might
Throw her back out.

I offer her some tea now,
She comes inside and gives me a cigarette.
She tells me all about how
She likes her friends, how she gets wet
When it rains.

Her friends live downstairs__
Her closet’s next to one of their doors.
She said she never did care
To sleep outside upon the floor
With the brooms.

Carpenter

from LABRADOR SUNSET

Carpenter

We were sitting, waiting for a job
When the carpenter began
To speak about the wonders of glue.
Said he never took a drink
‘Cause the glue got him high
In the morning__
Said he never went to school
‘Cause he wanted to start
Right out working.
He slopped the glue on the shelf
Attaching fancy designs.
Said he was getting ready for his last vacation.
I asked, “Why?”
He said he wouldn’t be around next year__
I asked, “Retirin’?”
He said no__he said that somebody told him
He’d be dead next year.
And he walked away slowly getting ready to die
By living and working as fast as he could.

Engine Song

from LABRADOR SUNSET

Engine Song

This train’s stopped at every station,
Carried alot of cargo in its day.
All the signs along the track bid ‘caution’__
I obeyed them right up to today.
Many were the faces on the platform,
One was the smile on the wall.
From welcomings and goodbyes I was born,
Pulling too much cargo made me stall.

This engine’s loose,
Leaving fifty boxcars behind__
It’s left the track and flying blind,
Fifty cars of crap behind.
Many ties rolled over,
Lots of steel left hot.
No more miles to cover__
I’m anchored in one spot,
Everywhere.

It’s time for all the parables to end now__
They never worked, you never understood.
You keep on crying and never take your bow__
I’d close the curtain if I only could.
Scenes and sub-plots cover up your needs,
You run on home to leave your home behind.
You beat your dog because he doesn’t care
About the pain you cannot leave behind.

Darkness Loves You

from LABRADOR SUNSET

Darkness Loves You

Take off your coat and your scarf,
Take off your shoes and lie down.
Feel the warmth by my hearth
And leave all the rest in the dark.
See the flames when they’re leaping__
Watch the shadows search your soft skin__
Oh, how they find every part of you,
Oh, how the darkness loves you.
Like the fire I’ll touch you__
Like the shadows I’ll kiss you.
From your heels to your eyes
Feel the darkness come alive.
Feel those two licking flames
Flicker warmly without shame__
Oh, you’re trembling and a’flowing,
Oh, how the fire’s got you glowing.

Same House

from LABRADOR SUNSET

Same House

Our eyes become the window
Of the same house__
All the doors blow open,
All the fires are blazing
With what we know,
With what we see,
With what we feel.

Our lives glow with the flame
From the same candle.
All the wax melts down__
You form it back around
Another wick
Another way
Another day.

You lay there breathing slowly
Deep in slumber
In my arms.
I kiss your hand, you smile__
My mind awakens for awhile
The memory
Of the first breath
That came to me.

The Bridge Song

from LABRADOR SUNSET

The Bridge Song

I’ll be a bridge to you,
You’ll be a bridge to me.
We’ll both be bridges
To somebody else
And all turn into
One big bridge.

The seeds have begun to grow__
The plants rise from the earth.
The flowers and the animals won’t say ‘no’
To the Spring that brings new birth.

The story shines in our eyes__
It is clear and simple to see.
What will it take for us to realize
Our common family?
